Be far Doom 1 was the most popular most likely because it was shareware and therefore free. It is estimated that Doom was installed on over 10 million machines at it's height and it was more widespread than Microsoft's Windows 95. Supposedly Bill Gates went to ID, the developers of Doom to make a Windows 95 port, called Doom 95 to help draw prove to customers that Windows 95 was great for gaming. Doom 2 and Doom 3 also were hits with Doom 2 selling over 2 million copies and Doom 3 selling over 1 million on the X-box alone.

Doom takes place on the moons of Mars as well as the planet Mars itself. The story behind Doom is that a portal leading to hell has opened and monsters have come pouring out looking to destroy humanity. That's about as far as the story progresses in the game however Doom 2 takes place as the monsters have begun invading Earth. Doom 3 is a retelling of the original Doom with much improved graphics and game play.

The diversity of the monsters is one of the reasons why the doom game series was so popular. In the beginning you fight zombies and imps (brown creatures able to spit fireballs) and at the end of the game you're fighting flaming skulls, gigantic cacodemons capable of firing an energy ball at you as well as extremely powerful demons and mechanical spiders. Aside from all of the monsters Doom is also a bit of a puzzle game with many secret doors and lifts that raise up and down which makes the game much more interesting.
